THIS IS IT...THE LAST DAY OF THE 2008 YEAR!!!

Yes, indeed, where did the time go? My last posting had to do with the people of America electing our first African American for president...just look at what has happened since that time! Barack and Joe slam-dunked John and Sarah...it wasn't even close.

Oh yes, so much has happened since those exciting, invigorating times! My students got involved with the "Pennies for Pearl Harbor" fundraiser. We raised $500 in a little over a month and a half...quite an accomplishment considering the local/national economy! The money will help the Pearl Harbor Memorial Fund build a new reception center--for visitors to the site of the USS ARIZONA, where close to a thousand sailors and marines are forever entombed. I told the kids that someday they might have the opportunity to visit Pearl Harbor, whether it's a honeymoon, the military, or as a tourist, and they can proudly boast that they had something to do with the impressive new buildings (the dedication took place in November, '08).

Another project we started was to initiate a trip to witness history--taking 21 of our students to Washington, DC for the inauguration of America's first African American president, Barack Obama! I could write volumes about the battle that took place in order to take these kids to see this unprecedented event in our history...but I won't do that on this posting. Let's just say that common sense ruled the day. There were undeniable "evil" forces working against the trip, but good prevailed. We're going!

The trip will begin at 6:30pm, Saturday, January 17, with a pre-departure pizza party in our community room. We'll depart for Jackson High School at approximately 7:30pm, but not before the media interviews the students, parents, and others. As luck would have it, four of our own students are going to be trained in videography by two local TV stations (WJRT-TV12 and WEYI-TV25). Pretty exciting stuff: our own students will record the trip from beginning to end! Better yet...they will be reporting back for the respective TV stations and their work will be featured on some of their programming. TV25 will have one of my students writing a Blog, along with video for same.

There will be much, much more on this truly momentous event in a future posting! Right now I'm gonna start the celebration of the NEW YEAR...the clock is ticking...we have less than four hours to go. This will be the BIG YEAR...the year of the Obama inauguration! And we're going to be there...
